Business Building Bridges:   How the private sector can help shaping effective and efficient

29th March 2010

The goal of this workshop is to increase the business community's ability to shape and progress global climate policy.

A viable climate deal will involve everyone: governments, business, and civil society. The role of business is particularly crucial. It will include redesigning production processes to be environmentally sustainable, delivering the technology to enable a low carbon society, and redirecting financial flows into climate friendly investments. It should also include adding intelligence and perspective into climate policy.

Because of its role, business needs a voice in climate policy development. For this reason, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Ecofys and Climate Focus, with support from the European Commission, are leading a project to define options for enhanced engagement of the private sector in developing and implementing climate change policy.

To incorporate the views of Asian stakeholder experts on this question, we are holding a stakeholder consultation workshop in Hong Kong on 29th March 2010. The meeting is being organized in partnership with the Business Environment Council and the Climate Change Business Forum.

During an interactive workshop, we will welcome experts from the private and public sectors to share feedback on proposed mechanisms for private sector engagement in the international policy process.

Key questions will include:

  • What are the primary business opportunities in Asia as it builds a resource-conserving and environment-friendly society?
  • How can Asian business benefit from enhanced engagement in international climate change policy development and implementation?
  • How can an international climate regime help in redirecting financial flows to financially friendly investments?
  • How can business in Asia play a role in the global technology development and deployment effort?
  • How do you envision the interest and expertise of Asian business represented in the international climate negotiations?
